Traditional Japanese Knife Making with Master Blacksmith Yasuhiro Okawara

Experience the Living Tradition of Hand-Forged Japanese Blades

Step inside the private workshop of Yasuhiro Okawara, one of the very few remaining blacksmiths in Japan who continues to forge blades entirely by hand. Refusing to use power hammers or automated tools, Mr. Okawara is devoted to preserving the centuries-old techniques of traditional Japanese blade-making.

During this exclusive program, you will:

  • Learn about Japan’s unique knife culture and the distinctive features of hand-forged Japanese knives compared to Western styles.

  • Learn the step-by-step process of crafting a knife, from raw steel to finished blade.

  • Witness the dramatic forging stage, where fire and hammer shape the steel — and try striking the hot metal with a hammer yourself under the master’s guidance.

  • Observe the polishing process that refines the blade’s shape and beauty.

  • Watch the final sharpening demonstration, where the edge comes to life in its finished form.

  • Enjoy a Q&A session with the master blacksmith.

At the end of your visit, you will also have the rare opportunity to purchase or order a knife directly from the craftsman in his workshop — a truly unique and personal souvenir from Japan.
